Palapa Tours offers a unique floating tiki bar & tour experience of the Toronto Habour, including the Toronto Islands. Departing city side at the Harbourfront Centre, the guests join us for a 90-minute cruise, hosted by you, a captain, and a bartender, spinning up margaritas, music & a good time. 

While hosting public and private tours, our goal is to ensure an engaging & fun experience on board the vessel!

Captain Job Description:


Palapa Tours is seeking Small Vessel Operators to join our crew this summer! Spend your summer captaining the floating tiki bar and taking guests on a tour of the Toronto Harbour!


THE POSITION:


Captain is responsible for driving our tiki bar boat around the Toronto Harbour during our regularly scheduled cruises from May to October with most cruises occurring on weekends. The captains act as Host & DJ for the show, playing music, and ensuring the wellbeing of the crew & guests. Our Captain’s are responsible for the safe operating, safety procedures, and basic maintenance of our 20-foot tiki boat.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:


SVOP, SDV-BS, ROC-M, and Marine First Aid certifications are preferred but not required. We will be providing a training course for successful applicants in May. Please include your availability for this time frame in your application. 


  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) or higher preferred

  • Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDV-BS) certified preferred

  • Marine First Aid certified preferred

  • Restricted Operators Certificate - Marine (ROC-M) preferred

  • 1-2 Years experience driving marine-powered vessels of any size.

  • Knowledge of marine navigation, waterways, marine machinery and systems, and vessel operation.

  • Comfortable interacting with guests

  • Must be 18+.

  • Must be responsible and safety-conscious. 

  • Must be able to perform physical boating duties such as docking and launching the ship, performing basic ship maintenance, and carrying equipment to and from the ship. 



JOB DUTIES:


  • Ensuring safe and clear navigation and communication via VHF radio to other vessels.

  • Overseeing safe conduct and carrying of passengers and crew aboard the vessel while maintaining the safety standards set by the Transport Canada inspection.

  • Completing minor maintenance or repairs and upkeep to the vessel/essential props during the workday and informing the General Manager and Maintenance Manager of any problems that arise that are out of the scope of the captain or need further repair. For example: filling up the fuel and informing the GM that all fuel containers have been emptied.

  • Communicating with all other captains on updates regarding docking procedures, optimizing route options, checklists, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

  • Coordinating the review of crew safety training every two weeks with the Administrator.

  • Deciding whether it’s safe to sail on a day where dangerous weather is forecasted, and communicating with the Administrator the evening before and morning of a scheduled sail.
